What is the best scalp micropigmentation aftercare lotion?

After scalp micropigmentation, a matte bald head will provide the best overall look, and your treatment will blend perfectly with your real hair. Some scalp micropigmentation aftercare lotion will even provide sunscreen/sunblock. It is important to only use lotions that are sulfate-free.  We also like to try to find and use lotions that are using natural and/or organic ingredients.

At NJ Scalp Micropigmentation we have tried and tested many different products some of which have sunscreens in them and some that don’t.  The price of these different lotions on this page varies, but just because one is more expensive than the other doesn’t mean that it is any better.  We strongly suggest using a lotion with sunscreen so you can protect the investment that you made with getting your scalp micropigmentation procedure. The ones on this page are our favorite scalp micropigmentation lotions.

Scalp Micropigmentation Aftercare Lotion (matte) – No Sunscreen

zero shine 2.0

We have a favorite when it comes to mattifying scalp micropigmentation aftercare lotion. Zero Shine 2.0 is the most pricey option on this page, but for a very good reason, and its well worth the added cost.  This stuff is amazing if you are looking for an extremely long-lasting matte lotion.  This stuff can last over 24 hours.  That’s right, 24 hours of no shiny head.  It is so important to have no shine with SMP as it keeps everything blended properly and looking its best.  This lotion, Zero Shine 2.0, is all-natural, made up of organic brown rice, vitamin E oil, sandalwood oil, tea tree oil, jojoba oil, and demineralized water.  This means you can use this product without any worries.  So many of our clients have told us how they have never found a matte lotion that actually lasts more than an hour or so, but this stuff is still on their heads the next morning. Guess what? It’s also waterproof!

Our second choice when it comes to mattifying scalp micropigmentation aftercare lotion is Fuse. It’s formulated specifically for people who have SMP.  Don’t let your cosmetic procedure fade away! Fuse’s light serum is fast absorbed and easy on your procedure eliminating shine to help blend your pigmentation with existing hair follicles. Tiger Grass reduces scarring and provides color retention. Made in the USA, Fuse’s lotion is made in America and is specifically engineered for scalp micropigmentation, as well as permanent makeup, and microblading.  FUSE is designed to help prolong your SMP investment resulting in fewer touch-ups and keeping your procedure looking great longer.

Marketed as a face moisturizer, we feel this also works great for bald guys who need a good matte scalp micropigmentation aftercare lotion.  Formulated using organic argan oil, a non-clogging natural moisturizer rich in antioxidants gives life to dull skin. Activated charcoal draws out and absorbs toxins while caffeine gives an energized look. Made from natural oils and plant extracts, this formula will tone and strengthen your skin. Daily use contributes to healthier skin and reductions in redness and irritation on your scalp. This skin also sheds cells more rapidly and therefore needs moisture to repair itself, allowing for younger skin cells to rise to the surface. We like this as a scalp micropigmentation moisturizer.

Scalp Micropigmentation Aftercare Lotion (matte) – With Sunscreen

zero shine 2.0 spf

It only makes sense that the best mattifying lotion also comes in an SPF version right? This is the SPF 50 version of Zero Shine. Zero Shine is currently the most mattifying skin cream on the market. Its anti-shine properties are unmatched while still maintaining the ability to moisturize and nourish your scalp skin. Mattifying the head is an essential component that makes SMP Scalp Micropigmentation look realistic. Zero Shine is thick and intended to last all day long. This lotion lasts through sweating and swimming. Zero Shine is not only durable and long-lasting, it is designed to not clog pores and allows you to sweat straight through it. Just pat it dry and you will not ruin your matte effect. SPF Zero Shine is the most mattifying sunblock on the market, and it is our top choice for sunblock the mattifies!

bare sunscreen

It’s tough to find a matte sunscreen with no tint, and any that you do find are usually extremely high in price.  This is probably the best matte scalp micropigmentation aftercare lotion with SPF that we have found to date, and it is very affordable. This is a soft, non-greasy, mineral matte sunscreen. If you plan to be out in the sun without a hat for a few hours, and you want to keep your SMP looking top-notch then you need a great matte sunscreen!  The company boasts that it is a cream-to-powder formulation that goes on as a silky, feather-light lotion that gently melts into skin for a nice matte finish, while an infusion of antioxidant-rich raspberry, grape, and carrot seed oils helps fight free radicals and promote youthful-looking skin year-round. Made in the US.  This product is our favorite sunscreen for the scalp!

hawaiian tropics

This choice is not the fanciest sunscreen on the list, but it is still our number two choice overall. Why?  Despite it being cheap and something you may expect to find at any store, it works well!  It is a matte sunscreen with no tint, and it is very inexpensive, plus it’s an SPF 50.  On top of that, you get a lot so it will no doubt last you the entire year.  Hawaiian Tropic® Matte sunscreen offers broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection in non-greasy, non-sticky, non-comedogenic formula that is perfect for all skin. Use this lightweight, mineral-enriched, dermatologist-tested sunscreen daily to help keep your SMP always looking fresh.

paulas choice

This is a pretty good matte sunscreen with no tint, and it is reasonable in price.  Extra Care Non-Greasy Sunscreen SPF 50 offers reliable broad-spectrum sun protection without feeling thick or oily. In fact, you may be surprised by its silky texture and smooth matte finish that’s so unlike many high-SPF sunscreens. This antioxidant-rich sunscreen is suitable for the scalp, face, and body. Its water-resistant formula is ideal for outdoor activities as well. This product is 100% fragrance- and colorant-free.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is scalp micropigmentation (SMP)?

Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a widely popular non-surgical hair loss solution whereby minuscule deposits of pigment simulate hair follicles on the scalp. SMP for men, however, is extremely intricate and not a mere “hair tattoo.” We use different pigments and needles to accurately simulate tiny hair follicles.

How long does scalp micropigmentation last?

SMP for men is permanent, however, the “dots” or injected pigment lessen in circumference very slightly over time. While this is not technically fading, the scalp will benefit from a touch-up session every 4-6 years. This nearly imperceptible decrease in circumference happens because macrophage cells in the human immune system will gradually break up and disperse pigment from any procedure, albeit extremely slowly.

What will my head look like immediately after treatment?

Expect some redness which will subside after a day or two.

Is SMP painful?

Although each client’s pain sensitivity differs, SMP is much less painful than a traditional tattoo. SMP needles are so thin, some customers say they feel almost nothing. When asked to rate their pain levels, most SMP clients report 1-3 on a scale of 1-10.

Can SMP be removed?

Yes, SMP for men can be removed with an electro-optic Q switched laser, which is used to heat and break up SMP pigmentation for easier absorption by phagocytes in the dermis. SMP is easy to remove because the pigment isn’t deposited as deep as traditional tattoo ink.

Does insurance cover scalp micropigmentation?

No, sorry. Scalp micropigmentation for men is a cosmetic procedure by nature, so it is rarely ever covered by medical insurance. It’s worth checking with your insurance provider about potential coverage since policies vary as do personal circumstances.

Is scalp micropigmentation safe?

SMP for men is a non-surgical hair loss solution. Needles deposit pigment below the upper layer of the skin, similar to a body art tattoo. The procedure is a very safe remedy for male hair loss when performed by a professional.

How is SMP different than a regular tattoo?

Unlike traditional tattooing, SMP pigment is deposited near the epidermal layer rather than deep inside the dermal layer. SMP can be removed by laser much more easily than traditional tattoos.

Will I be able to go in the sun?

We recommend always using some sort of sunscreen to retain the ink its longest. Should you choose not to use sunscreen, for the first 30 days you must cover your head with sunscreen or a hat.

What is the treatment process and how long is one session?

Depending on the level of baldness or male hair loss, the first treatment session generally takes 1-3 hours while the second and third sessions take 1-2 hours. Each session is performed 1-2 weeks apart with the average client receiving 3 sessions.

What should I be cautious of in the days following my treatment?

In the first 4 days following treatment, avoid shaving, showers, sweating, scrubbing, shampooing topicals and long term exposure to sunlight. It’s okay to lightly dab the area with wet cloths, but do not soak the head. After 4 days, it’s okay to shower (lightly), shave, and use fragrance free moisturizers. After 10 days, you can resume your normal activities, but it’s still best to avoid long term sunlight for 30 days.

How often will men need to shave their head?

This is a personal preference, but most clients opt for a buzzed look where they shave every 1-3 days.

How much does scalp micropigmentation cost?

The cost of SMP for men varies per client.  We base the cost on how much of the treatment needs to be applied and by how many sessions are needed per client, which is assessed based on male hair loss.  We offer FREE consultations for everyone. During the consultation, we will be able to assess your scalp and from there we can judge approximately how much treatment and how many sessions you will need.

Does micropigmentation look natural / real?

Scalp micropigmentation for men looks incredibly real, as long as it is applied correctly. Many of our clients say their family, friends, and co-workers say they look younger or something looks different about them, but no one ever knows what it is that has changed and that’s what we want when addressing male hair loss!

Does SMP stimulate hair growth or help grow my hair back?

No, sorry, scalp micropigmentation for men will not grow your hair back. However, SMP for men gives you the look of short hair, a tight buzz-cut, or fuller hair density.
